“In the language of images, the photographs of Art Brewer are known for speaking with penetrating truth, enlivened with an edgy wit. As a subjective experience, his images thrill us with their presence, bringing us somehow back into ourselves.” — Drew Kampion. Art Brewer began his career as a teen shooting local Laguna surfers and freelancing for Surfer Magazine in the late sixties. A self-taught photographer who once studied with Ansel Adams, he has circled the globe countless times chasing the world’s best waves and the surfers who chase them. Art’s images have been capturing the surf lifestyle, the sport, and its evolution throughout the decades. He continues to shoot commercially as well as teaching action surf photography workshops with the New York School of Visual Arts. Art has published a wonderful book titled, Masters of Surf Photography. RIP, Art (2022).
