Biography

Willy Uribe. 1965. Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. Words and photos... is my work. Between them, surf words and surf photos are the cream.

I started writing in 1977, the same year i started surfing. My first photo's were in 1984, the same year i began to study photography. Since then, surfing, words and photos have all come together. And also travel.

I think that in a competitive surf-photo scene like today, a photographer must know his path well. Personally, i don´t believe in surf companies, specially, and surf magazines to walk my path. They are only part of the total scene. I know that the main actor is the surfer, the person... and i work for him.

The rates for photos and words in surf magazines are so low, and the life of an unknown surf photographer like me is like walking on a knife edge. I need to make my own editorial and web works and must to know the feeling of the surf people, or at least, the surf people that is interesting for me, that run in a different way of the surf bussines.

Professional curriculum:
1988 - work on Tres60, spanish surf mag.
1989 - the spanish army robe me a year
1990 - edited Marejada Surf, a magazine that only ran for two issues. Stayed in the hands of the advertisment and surf trades... and was one of the worst experience of my life.
1991-99 - aerial photographer flying 2.500 h. over Spain, Portugal and Puerto Rico and working on several editorial works.
2000-2006 - freelance photojournalist
2003 - edited “Crónicas del salitre”, a surf book with none photos that was a great apluse by the spanish surf community.

Don't believe in...
Social hipocrisy, egoist capitalism, xenofobia and imperialism.

Don't believe in...
Surfing is a way of life, advertisment, a house on the beach, a exclusive boat trip to Mentawai.

I believe in...
Respect to others, to the land, to ourselves.
